Curriculum

The Victoria Grammar School proudly provides a unique educational setting designed to challenge and nurture each student to become a responsible citizen in society. The school’s impressive range of resources and program helps to define it as a leader in education.

The program of study integrates inquiry based learning and the best of the British Curriculum. The school year runs from September to June and is divided into three terms.

The most important aspect of successfully educating our children is maintaining open communication between the home and school. The Victoria Grammar School maintains a collaborative and cohesive partnership among the home, school and community. This promotes high standards of values, integrity and service and prepares students to be productive members of society.

Our small class sizes, dedicated and experienced teachers are always willing to go the extra mile for students. Our aim is to create an environment where everyone looks forward to being at school.

With a strong emphasis on academics, students are appropriately challenged at each level. Academic pursuits must be balanced with the many other facets of child development to meet our ultimate goal of guiding children to grow into secure, confident and all-rounded individuals.

The Primary School begins with the Reception Class (4 going on 5 year olds) and ends with our students taking the Checkpoint Examination in Year 6 (11year olds).

Our Curriculum is based on the Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) for primary schools.

Pupils are taught in both self-contained and departmentalized classrooms. The dedicated teachers create an environment that enables each student to achieve his or her academic potential.

The Language Arts curriculum provides an understanding of the English language with concentration on reading, creative writing, spelling, speaking and listening skills. Our phonics-based approach to reading successfully prepares pupils to use their writing and verbal skills effectively.

Pupils work in small groups, thus enabling teachers to guide them through the Math Programme. This allows the teachers to identify and concentrate on areas of difficulty.

In addition to Language Arts and Mathematics and Science being important elements of the core curriculum, the study of French, Physical Education, Moral Education, Health, Information Technology, Music and Art complete our programme and provide pupils with a wide range of knowledge and experiences.

The Victoria Grammar School’s secondary section starts from Year 7 and ends with our students sitting the International General Certificate for Secondary Education (I. G. C. S. E. – O’ Level) in Year 11. Students then enter the Sixth Form College for two years after which they take the I.G.C.S.E – A Level Exam.

The Victoria Grammar School’s Lower Secondary is a 3-year pre IGCSE programme based on the Cambridge Assessment International Education curriculum and the Key Stage 3 English National curriculum. The lower secondary programme serves as a bridge between the primary school and the upper secondary school (IGCSE & GCE A Level).

Students will be instructed in both self-contained and departmentalized classrooms

Our main focus is to develop the 5 learner attributes –

  • Confident in working with information and ideas – their own and those of others
  • Responsible for themselves, responsive to and respectful of others
  • Reflective as learners, developing their ability to learn
  • Innovative and equipped for new and future challenges
  • Engaged intellectually and socially, ready to make a difference

The curriculum develops skills and understanding in the core subjects; English, Mathematics and Science for the first three years of the Secondary Education. In addition, the students are taught to be God-fearing, caring, open-minded and to develop a passion for life-long learning.

Our students will follow a general course of study including:

  • English Language and Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Science (Physics, Biology, and Chemistry)
  • Information Communication Technology (ICT)
  • French
  • History
  • Geography
  • S. H. E. / Counseling
  • Music
  • Art & Design
  • Physical Education (P.E)

Our students are also tasked to

  • Take up the role of an independent learner
  • Gain the best possible results in all areas of learning
  • Achieve significant and rounded personal development

Our Staff are tasked to:

  • Value every student and colleague
  • Work constantly to raise expectations
  • Nurture, share and celebrate the successes of every member of the school community
  • Work in close partnership with students, parents and guardians
  • Continuously develop themselves professionally to meet the needs of the students.

OTHER FACILITIES

The French, Information Technology, Art / Design and Music Departments form an integral part of the school’s curriculum. They are all introduced to the children from the Reception Class.

Library

The Library is a focal point for each and every student at The Victoria Grammar School.

All classes from Reception through to Year 6 have regular visits to the library to read and learn library skills.

Students in the Secondary School are encouraged to use the Library as often as possible. This is to aid them in their researches.

The library remains open after school for students to read and borrow books.

EXTRA CURICCULAR ACTIVITIES

Our students have opportunities to participate and be active members of our school community. They are encouraged to be involved in after school activities appropriate to their age level. Activities offered include

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Ballet
  • Scouts / Girl Guides / Brownies

The strong academic curriculum and varied activities and programmes help students develop a solid academic foundation which enables them to excel in every area of their lives
